 What kind of ceremony do I need? There are many kinds of wedding ceremonies and variations on each kind: Civil Ceremony This is the basic legal minimum requirement for marriage. The ceremony is very short and contains no references to any specific religious tradition. If you go to Vegas or hire a Justice of the Peace as your ceremony officiant, this is the ceremony you will most likely receive. Elopement Ceremony An elopement ceremony is conducted with few or no guests in attendance. Couples choose elopement ceremonies if they desire to share the moment of their vows only with each other, if they wish to enjoy a stress-free and romantic private ceremony before their public wedding, or they have reasons to conceal their marriage. In California, elopements are legally binding if the couple obtains a confidential marriage license first; such licenses require no witnesses. Traditional Religious Ceremony Conducted by clergy. Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Hindu, and Muslim ceremonies vary widely. Religious ceremonies have also been devised for those in Druidic or Pagan practice. Non-Traditional Religious Ceremony Usually performed by non-denominational/interfaith clergy. Non-traditional ceremonies may combine religious ceremonial elements with secular material; some interfaith couples use elements from both of their traditions in one ceremony, or have two clergypersons conduct the ceremony simultaneously. Interfaith Ceremony Usually performed by non-denominational/interfaith clergy; sometimes two clergy members of different faiths create and conduct the wedding cooperatively. Incorporates elements honoring both families' traditions and cultures in one ceremony. Non-Religious Wedding Ceremony The term "non-religious" can mean many things in relation to weddings; it can mean a ceremony that's spiritual in tone but not beholden to any specific religion's ideas or texts, or it can mean a ceremony with a humanist or romantic emphasis without references to spirituality or religion. Custom Wedding Ceremony Couples create a unique ceremony, utilizing traditional and secular elements such as Unity candles, original vows, meditations, handfasting, dance, vows incorporating family members, etc.; special rituals are often created just for the occasion. Simple Wedding Ceremony In keeping with the tenets of "voluntary simplicity" (consciously forgoing conspicuous consumerism in order to reduce impact on the environment, support sustainable businesses, and increase a spiritual sense of existence) a couple may choose to keep wedding-related spending and products to a minimum. Flowers, food, and location are often provided cooperatively by the friends and family of the bride and groom. Simple weddings seek to create a sense of community and emphasize the meaning of the wedding ritual over material trappings and pageantry. Theme Wedding Ceremony Anything goes! Theme weddings are fun, creative, and memorable. Historical themes such as Victorian, Shakespearean, and Gothic are popular; so are more contemporary themes like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, or Dr. Seuss. Unusual locations (roller coasters, rodeos, skydiving, museums, street fairs) can add to the ambience. Commitment Ceremony A ceremony to express and confirm love and faithfulness between two people who cannot or do not wish to legally marry. These custom ceremonies are as individual as the special couples who create them, but they are not legally binding. Renewal of Vows Ceremony A ceremony for already-married people who wish to reaffirm their love and commitment. Sometimes the ceremony is a re-enactment of the original ceremony; often couples create a new ceremony with original vows.
